Uchiha Nariko was conceived in the era of international instability prior to the events of the Third Shinobi World War. Due to the growing decline in national strength, many denizens of the Five Great Nations began to lose faith in their respective villages. Defection was a common practice and minor skirmishes often broke out with the smaller, neighboring countries. Uchiha Ayumi, Nariko's mother and a devote member of the Wèi bào, utilized her connections as niece of the Fire Daimyou in order to relocate herself and her husband to the Land of Stone. Though they did not defect from their home village, they tarried there; refraining from involving themselves within the affairs of their home nation while the war began. There, Ayumi gave birth to Nariko.
Shortly after her birth, Sanji Uchiha, Nariko's father, requested a special writ that would allow him to home educate his newborn daughter under the official sanction of the Hidden Leaf Village. Though the request was typically out of the question, it was granted only due to his wife being a close relative of the local Daimyou. Therefore, Sanji commenced the training and education of his only child at the moment she could walk. Years later, he would be recalled back into the midst of Konoha for a vital meeting amongst the Uchiha clan. Ayumi accompanied him for this voyage and left Nariko in the care of Daikaku-ji Temple for the duration of their stay; what was poised to be a simple, three day journey to discuss the growing hostilities between the Uchiha and the Hidden Leaf would turn into a devastation that would forever scar the young Nariko. On the evening of their arrival, the combined might of Itachi Uchiha and the enigma known as Tobi massacred the entire Uchiha Clan, leaving Sasuke Uchiha as the only survivor. Fortunately, the two had no knowledge of Nariko's existence.
Following the massacre, the monks of Daikaku-ji Temple relocated the shattered Nariko to the Land of Fire where she was briefly placed under the care of the Fire Temple. She was later taken into the Fire Daimyou's own home shortly thereafter. The Daimyou was excessively overprotective in nature regarding his great niece, often keeping her isolated from the outside world, save for elite instructors whom would advance her shinobi training. After a period of three years of continued training, she was enlisted within Konoha's general forces as a Chunin; her primary focus being the gathering of intelligence. Personally, she yearned for a simple life within the care of the Monks, but cooperated with the decision only due to the Third Hokage's "promise" that she would someday be assigned missions to gather intelligence regarding the whereabouts of Itachi. Based on this farce, she began a flawless career under the Hidden Leaf.
For a period of two years she faithfully served. Due to her exceptional level of skill, she was promoted to the rank of Jounin. During her time within the general forces, she adopted several aliases; some to fit the missions, others simply to preserve her identity as an Uchiha. However, despite her efforts to keep her lineage as close to secret as possible, rumors flew within the ranks about another survivor of the Uchiha Massacre. These rumors spread like wildfire and ultimately reached the ears of the enigma himself: Tobi, thus prompting him to investigate. While on a routine mission, she and her teammates were confronted by a squad of mercenary ninja, a gaggle of thugs, and the Masked Man. In the ensuing chaos, Nariko's teammates were occupied by the hired rogues while Tobi engaged her; his intent being to see for himself whether or not she truly was the rumored survivor. Once confirmed by a simple glance of her Sharingan, Tobi overwhelmed her defenses with a display of his signature space-time ninjutsu and disarmed her with minimal effort. He then revealed the entire truth of the Uchiha Clan Massacre, explaining to her that the village she served was to blame for the deaths of her kin. He also revealed the locations of the secret meeting hall of the clan and the location of an old artifact of the clan that would "prove his benign intentions"; but this was truly nothing more than a means of attempted manipulation. Though she resisted and escaped with her teammates, the damage was done: her faith in the Hidden Leaf was shattered.
Immediately following the mission, she confronted the Third Hokage demanding the truth, but was swiftly dismissed; his excuse being the priority of the Chunin Examinations and a promise that they would speak once the event had concluded. That dialogue never occurred, as the joint forces of Sunagakure and Otogakure amassed to invade Konohagakure during the final portion of the Exam. Despite her chaotic feelings, she valiently defended the village from the invaders. In the aftermath, she slipped away, defecting from the Hidden Leaf and returning to the place of her birth where she was welcomed with open arms. She was inducted into the order of monks her mother had dutifully served within and was enlightened to the existence of the Dragons. Soon thereafter, she made the Pilgrimage to the Land of Water and met with the Dragon King of the East himself. Along her travels, she met for the first time the woman whom would forever hold her heart: Nimue Yuki, and convinced her to leave the mercenary's life and come to the Land of Stone with her; Nimue was ultimately convinced. Due to her successful Pilgrimage, she was officially recognized as one of the Wèi bào and given the support of the Dragons. From thence she served as a member of the Wèi bào, leaving the Land of Stone only once to protect her uncle during the events of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
